Jaffe Update 4: A hard bike

As I alluded to in my previous post, the last few days have been a blur. Now that we're at the halfway point in our trip, I can easily say that we've seen a great many fantastic sights, and met a quite a few great people (and some not-so great ones as well). Just yesterday we biked up Kirkstone Pass, a mountain pass that is 2 miles long and a 1/4 mile vertical. I had to stay in the lowest gears possible just to keep moving, and took breaks every 100 vertical feet or so. It said that it was a 13% grade, but that was likely an average.  My guess is that it started out at 0-5%, then upped to 15-20% about a mile in. If you want to bike up a 20% grade, try going up Old Mill, the alternative route to the Mayfield Hill. Oh, and then multiply that by 10.

In any case, last night we stayed at the Ambleside Youth Hostel, which I recommend nobody stay there; honestly, the worst place at which I've ever slept. But you can read more about that in a review Jacob plans on writing tomorrow. Today we are heading out to Birmingham via train. I hope we get there alright.

  1. Hi Micah! Wow, your project/trip sounds really interesting as well as exhausting! I have to admit, I needed to do a little digging to figure out exactly what it is that you're doing on project, but it sounds really cool. In your posts so far, you're sort of just talked about logistical things like packing and legs of your journey, but I'd be intrigued to hear more about the actual sights you and your brother are seeing along the way by bike. I've never been to Europe, barely even our of the country to my memory, so I don't really know what it's like over there. I suppose you're probably keeping a more detailed log of your experiences on your daily blog of your travels, but I think you should include a bit of that on here too! The nature of your ambitious project sounds extremely physically taxing, so I hope you guys aren't running yourselves into the ground. I personally would totally read the review of the terrible hotel where you guys stayed, but I enjoy those types of things, so I hope you find the time to post that soon! Safe travels for the rest of your excursion!
